President's Message

Toshiaki Tsurumaru President

It has been nearly 70 years since Sapporo Gakuin University emerged from its fledgling predecessor, Sapporo Bunka Senmon Gakuin (Sapporo College of Liberal Arts). Within that span, it evolved into Sapporo Junior College, then Sapporo College of Commerce, and flourished into a liberal arts university, currently with five faculties, nine departments and three graduate schools.
It can well be stated that the spirit which underlay the foundation of the original Sapporo Senmon Bunka Gakuin still serves as the cornerstone for the philosophy of Sapporo Gakuin University today, and as a guide for all of its academic and co-curricular pursuits.

Autonomy – “A university that fosters self-sufficiency”
By studying the art of problem-solving, students learn to self-directedly identify issues, seek appropriate methods of analysis, and offer possible solutions. Further examination and verification of those solutions guides them toward the most appropriate one. SGU develops the kind of students who, when faced with challenges or adversity in the future, will be able to maintain an open mind as well as steadfast beliefs, and be able to thrive in society and guide themselves toward solutions.

Human rights – “A university that values human rights”
As the ancients advised, know thyself. This knowledge begins, however, with an understanding of others, as those who cannot look after others cannot look after themselves. At SGU, both in and out of the classroom, we seek to instill in our students the ability to connect with others around them, and the fundamental qualities that allow them to “value human rights.”

Coexistence – “A university in harmony with its community”
It goes without saying that a university has a multitude of intellectual resources. However, at SGU we believe it is important that these resources should be available not only to students but to the surrounding social community as well.
At SGU, the fields of humanities and social sciences explore the nature of human interaction, and a stronger bond between the local community becomes, in effect, an important part of the university’s intellectual resources. SGU seeks to nurture this virtuous cycle between the university and the community it exists in.

Cooperation – “A university collaboratively created by its students and staff”
There are a great many people—students, educators, administrators, parents, graduates, the local community—who help drive and develop the university’s mechanism of education and research. At SGU, we regard everyone as a team member. It is our goal to actively solicit opinions and ideas, and to put them toward the betterment of the university as a whole.

Regardless of whether we are consciously aware of it or not, we live our lives contemplating things and making decisions to the best of our abilities. And, we decide things based on what we know. Of course, without good knowledge we cannot be guided toward sound judgments. In order to achieve that knowledge, a broad knowledge base is essential. At Sapporo Gakuin University, through our traditional classes, our audit classes, our extension classes and our community college classes, we aim to nurture the acquisition of an abundant education and a productive life, and we wholeheartedly welcome and support anyone with a “thirst for knowledge.”
