Message from the President
KUNIHITO KAWANISHI, PRESIDENT OF SAPPORO GAKUIN UNIVERSITY
Our university’s origins lie in Sapporo Bunka Senmon Gakuin (Sapporo College of Liberal Arts), which subsequently developed into Sapporo Junior College, Sapporo College of Commerce, and then Sapporo Gakuin University, a liberal arts university that now consists of four faculties, seven departments, and three graduate schools. As a liberal arts university, we will develop the individuals who will lead the 21st century by providing a broad liberal arts education alongside in-depth specialized education, as well as helping achieve the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) by solving the varied problems faced by individuals, organizations (companies, government offices, social welfare corporations, etc.), and society as a whole.
In 2020, we adopted a new tagline, “One life, Many answers,” to represent education at Sapporo Gakuin University. This tagline expresses that the future we are embarking on holds many possibilities, that there is not just one answer, but countless answers, and that we will find those answers by continuing to challenge ourselves. It also expresses a sense of excitement for the future possibilities opening up for our students, and the desire of our faculty and staff to support students in finding answers to their individual needs by drawing out their abilities to the fullest, rather than trying to fit them into preconceived categories.
As such, we provide unique educational value through “active learning,” in which students learn independently based on face-to-face and remote lectures that allow for broad and in-depth study; “action learning,” in which students learn through a hypothesis-action-verification cycle; and "open education,” in which students learn on and off-campus with cooperation and support from a variety of people and organizations, as well as partnerships with other educational institutions such as high schools, universities, technical colleges, and vocational schools.
In line with these principles, Sapporo Gakuin University will provide problem-solving, practical education in which students play the leading role, not only at the Ebetsu Campus, which has a history of over half a century, but also at the Shin-Sapporo Campus, which opened in 2021, and at sites in Hokkaido, Honshu, and overseas. We at Sapporo Gakuin University will continue to create social innovation through the active practice of new education and research, the development of talented professionals, and the resolution of social issues in order to fulfill the SDGs.
